Ann Reeves Jarvis was a social activist who had organized groups of women to work on public health issues, and Anna Jarvis wanted to honor her mother's work by creating a holiday dedicated to all mothers.

The first Mother's Day celebration was held on May 10, 1908, in Grafton, West Virginia, where Anna Jarvis and a group of supporters held a memorial service for her mother. The event was so successful that Anna Jarvis began lobbying for Mother's Day to be recognized as a national holiday, and by 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.
