Mother's Day in the United States is celebrated annually on the second Sunday in May, and it has become a widely recognized and beloved holiday. While many people view it as an opportunity to celebrate their own mothers and the mothers in their lives, few know the history behind the holiday's origins.

The concept of Mother's Day can be traced back to ancient civilizations, but the modern holiday as we know it in the United States was first celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, who had passed away three years earlier. Ann Reeves Jarvis was a social activist who had organized groups of women to work on public health issues, and Anna Jarvis wanted to honor her mother's work by creating a holiday dedicated to all mothers.

The first Mother's Day celebration was held on May 10, 1908, in Grafton, West Virginia, where Anna Jarvis and a group of supporters held a memorial service for her mother. The event was so successful that Anna Jarvis began lobbying for Mother's Day to be recognized as a national holiday, and by 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day.

The holiday quickly caught on, and today it is celebrated not just in the United States but in many countries around the world. While the holiday's commercialization has been a source of controversy in recent years, the underlying sentiment of honoring and celebrating mothers remains a cherished tradition
