What Everyone Should Know About Living in South Florida

Florida is a state full of ancient landscaping, flowering plants and tales of the ocean. Besides some of the best architecture and the communities, there are some pointers our homeowners should know about living in South Florida. Here are 10-tips for living in a tropical climate and the least you should know about moving to a place like Boca Raton. 

Get Used to the Climate

Tip 1: The philosophy “You’ll get used to the temperature” is true. Most snowbirds plan their yearly stay in Boca Raton between Sept and February because of the change in climate. During these months you may experience temperatures in the 70s and 80s and occasionally, it can get colder. Historically, there’s been traces of snow reported first in the 1700s. However, if you want to see snow, you can visit Alpine Adventure Park found in Tampa. But, for most people trying to escape the cold, Florida is their haven. You will get used to the temperatures somewhat, but remember Floridians are used to sweating and living with air conditioning 24/7. 

Bugs Call Florida Home Too

Tip 2: Living with bugs is a part of life here in Florida. The best thing you can do is have an excellent exterminator and to know of what we live with around these parts. Most cases the pesky critters won’t be around unless you spend time outdoors or on the beach areas. Just be sure to wear bug spray and stay away from areas where there could be issues. For instance, if you’re out walking stay away from red ants and don’t step on the nests. Sure, sounds easy, but if you’ve never seen a red ant hill you may not be aware, and the bite is gnarly.  But if you live in the city areas you most likely will never encounter such a problem. 

Dogs Aren’t Allowed on All South Florida Beaches

Tip 3: Enjoy the beach areas but leave the dog home. Unless you’re in a designated area with ‘Fido’ don’t bring him to the beach. Our state has strict laws prohibiting dogs from running rapid at our sandy shoreline. If you bring your pup to one of the beach areas, be sure to keep him/her on a leash and only bring the furry friends to places where they allow dogs. Boca Raton has several dog friendly parks in the area such as Mizner Dog Park where you will need a permit. Boca residents get in for free, whereas visitors pay a small fee. However, if security can fine you if they approach you and you don’t have the pass. Just an FYI for our dog owners. 

Educate Yourself on Hurricane Season

Tip 4: You must learn how to prepare for hurricane season. Hurricanes are just another part of living in the Florida region. You can find tons of info online for preparing for the season. If you’re a snowbird or live in our state part-time, be sure to secure your home or condo before heading back home. In addition, educate yourself on what to do to prepare for a hurricane. Know the evacuation zones, pet shelters and everything you can to combat increment weather including storm window installations. 

Get Used to Wearing Sunscreen

Tip 5: Get used to wearing a lot of sunscreens and hats. Protecting your skin and eyes from the sun is imperative when living in a tropical zone. Be sure to invest in the best sunscreen and glasses to avoid damage from the powerful sun. Even on shady days the sun’s rays can burn you to a crisp. It’s important to know how to combat. 

The Beach is a Part of Life

Tip 6: Enjoy the water at your own risk. There are many unprotected areas along Florida’s beaches without lifeguards on duty. Be sure to check the water’s conditions for things like rip tides and jelly fish blooms. Places where there are lifeguards present will display flags warning swimmers of possible danger such as sharks. As long as you take the necessary precautions you should be fine.

Staying Vigilant is Expected Anywhere in the USA

Tip 7: Remember to stay vigilant. While Boca Raton’s crime rate is less than the national U.S. average, there’s still a crime index where you need to take caution. Get to know your neighbors as they’re the liaison who may help you when you’re not around. Most of our luxury communities take additional measures to ensure your safety, such as guarded entry and patrol. But, it's always good to stay aware to decrease crime. 

Never a Dull Moment with Storms to Entertainment

Tip 8: Prepare to never have a dull moment. From the tropical storms to the list of exciting events, you’ll never have a chance for boredom. Even the weather can make life more exciting here in the South. We’ve also got some of the most entertaining hot spots in the state. No matter what’s going on, you can bet you’ll get a charge out of life. While entertainment and rain are two different things, they can be unpredictable where Floridians just embrace the opportunity to have fun. 

Getting Involved with the Community is Important

Tip 9: Get involved in your community. Boca Raton is a hub for friendly people who love to live life to the fullest. If you’re new to our city, be sure to get out and get involved. Living in the state can intimidate for somewhere others integrate without worry. Be sure to stay in touch with your neighbors and volunteer to learn more about the residents and homeowners. You’ll enjoy your home here even more.

Tip 10: Enjoy the groves of fresh fruits, veggies and more. Besides having a laid-back vibe, South Florida and Boca Raton is an excellent place to watch your calories. Any of the markets will provide fresh food such as papaya, mangoes and pineapple grown right here. If you’re a fan of fish and shellfish, you’re in the right place. Throughout the year the fresh catch of the day is the talk of the town. You are always welcome to charter and fish for your own dinner or stop by one of the many restaurants where you can indulge. Having access to the produce and fish is yet another perk for those who living in Boca Raton.
