It’s oftentimes said a “man’s home is his castle”. While that may be the case, there is some truth that a person’s home is a reflection of their personality and lifestyle. The composition of the home the materials and colors selected and even the construction reveal something about the home owners. When you live in a place like South Florida and especially Boca Raton, you will see a variety of home styles. An architect may design a home partially because of the climate and its functionality but many times it’s due to what’s trending in the market. Here’s a list with some descriptions of the styles of housing that you will find in and around this part of Palm Beach County.

Probably one of the most common types of designs around this area would be that of the Mediterranean style homes. Classic Mediterranean offers arched windows and doorways, red ceramic or clay roofing, and wrought iron balconies. This style home was primarily adopted from countries such as Spain, France and Italy and is a very distinctive look. This design became popular in the 1920’s and 30’s in Florida within the coastal resorts. Places like the Breakers in Palm Beach are a good rendition of the Mediterranean architecture.

Another influence from the 20’s era was that of Art Deco. This look boasts hard edges, geometric shapes with towers that are constructed with zigzag patterns, otherwise known as chevrons. These are all true characters of the ultra-swanky Art Deco design. Think of traditional homes that are colliding with an urban or post machine age production. This style is nothing new and was adopted by the Society of Decorative Artists in the beginning of the 1900’s. Although you can see the Art Deco design around the world, many people in the United States associate this style with modernist architecture. Much of this retro-style can be seen in Miami’s Art Deco District. But, you will find plenty of examples in Boca Raton still standing today. The Aragon Condominium community shows construction distinct to what this particular style has to offer.

The next style we’d like to bring your attention to is that of Key West. The Key West home has adopted a coastal vibe. These are island plantation style homes inspired by designs from the Caribbean and Old Key West. What you’ll find here is a lot of white cabinetry, and crown molding that meets pastel exteriors typically of wood construction. It’s not uncommon to see the homes raised with a patio below as this was a style developed in the 19th century to avoid flooding. Key West style homes oftentimes are designed with plantation shutter windows and a tropical flavor. These tend to have a cottage feel to them without neglecting their appeal of a seaside oasis. Construction found at the City Walk of Pineapple Grove shows distinct character leaning toward Key West style homes.

The Ranch Style home is inevitably one that you’ll find throughout the country, but is amongst one of the most preferred in this area. This type of home became more popular in the 50’s and 60’s and tends to be in suburban settings. These one story pitched roof dwellings come with built-in garages, and can be built with either wood or brick exteriors. They tend to have sliding glass windows that lead out to patio areas. Our Boca Teca neighborhood is thriving with these single-family households. While these carry a wide-eave overhang typically, many people build on with additions to personalize their taste. While this style originated in the United States, it was also called a “California Ranch” or a “Rambler House” because of its long profile with a minimalist approach to exterior decor.

Many times people confuse Art Deco with Modern Style Homes. While there are some similarities, with contemporary and modern homes they vary due to era built. Modern homes are post machination era and contemporary is contributor of what is being built today. The Modern style home is full of well-known architects like Frank Lloyd Wright and Joseph Eichler, who took design to a whole new level. They mixed 21st century. Pre-modern elements with futuristic ambiance. Terms like Expressionism, Bauhaus and even Constructivism have played a key role in developing the distinctive style of the Modern Home. Although the Modern style home is found more in the Mid-West luxury markets, this is another common request of the ‘Minimalist’ designs found today.

In the more mature areas of Boca Raton, you’ll see a common theme of Bungalows known as ‘Craftsman’ homes. These typically are designed with wood or brick siding have low-gabled roof. The American Craftsman home evolved from the British Art movement from the mid 1800’s. Natural materials such as wood flooring, stone siding and a myriad of other textures show the craftsmanship used to perfect each structure. Another name for this type of structure is the American Victorian took the wraparound porch to a whole new level. You can see much of this type of design in all of South Florida with variations such as clay tiles added for roofing. Primarily this style was adapted from Pasadena, California and is carried throughout the nation today in some of the trendiest cities.

Undoubtedly one of the most sought after designs for this area in the luxury markets are the French Country Style homes. The exterior of these homes can be wood, stone or a mixture of both. Heavy wood garage doors with thick iron accents are commonly found throughout our country club communities. Tall roofing with raised ceilings on the interior give a regal appearance, even with smaller floor plans. These can resemble estate-like chateaus or small farmhouses. Either design is a matter of preference for both the builder and the home owners.

Boca Raton and the neighboring towns such as Highland Beach and Delray Beach offer a wide selection of these styles. Whether you’re seeking a home for the winter months or one to live in year-round, there’s plenty of inventory to choose from.
