The Very Least You Need to Know About South Florida Beaches

It seems to be a lot of news buzzing around about the latest approval for the new public golf course. While we can certainly use another golf course and more recreation in Boca Raton, there are a few things we find interesting for the residents of the city. Since many of our homeowners invest in their luxury condos, we pulled together some interesting information regarding the beach and park areas, and the very least you should know. Take a read and find out more.

Park Structures are Aging and Will be Receiving Repair

Did you know many of our parks and the beach area are considered 'aging'? Perhaps this is one of the biggest reasons the officials recently approved a budget of $39 million to upgrade, repair and revamp a vast stretch next to the beach. A lot of homeowners are not in favor of the tax hikes, but more importantly, places like Gumbo Limbo Spanish River Park will have an entirely new building and facility. Currently, the wildlife refuge is home for rehabilitating marine life, and it's also a sanctuary for exotic birds and fish. However, the newer plans will include a bigger facility and be updated, so it's safe for both resident sea creatures as well as visitors.

Big News for Boca Beach Residents

Next, the BIG talk this past week is for the large company, Compson Boca Group made an insane offer on another part of the beach at $67.5 million, many of our condo owners aren't sure what to think. Bear in mind Boca Beach, and Parks district haven't made a final determination or accepted the offer, but if they do, CBG is looking to add a hotel, more condominiums, and a marina. But, some of the residents are arguing to build the Boca National Golf Course on this land. They feel rather than the parcel next to Boca Beach; this is more suitable. Nonetheless, something we'll certainly be keeping our eye out since luxury condos are right up our walkway!

Protection of Wildlife is Necessary for Beachfront Property

Besides the controversy, another interesting fact you should know if you're looking to buy a home on the beach is the protection of sea turtles. Sea turtles during their hatching season, seek light to find their way back to the ocean and for safety. Homeowners are asked not to use bright lighting during this season as the animals are compelled to go toward the light and not follow the natural light from the moon. Be sure to check with your real estate agent or HOA for the details and what is safe for our wildlife.

Dogs are Only Allowed on Beaches Designated for Them

The authorities prohibit dogs on most of South Florida's beaches. However, there are designated areas such as Bark Beach, which will allow you to bring your furry friends. Be sure to follow the rules, such as no digging in the sand and keeping your dog on a leash to ensure you don't get a ticket. Always remember to pick up after your animals and ensure you have the proper permit. Boca Raton residents can pay the City & Beach Park District $31 during weekdays and $11 on the weekends. Bear in mind, you must have a permit, and any non-residents visiting the beach can be subjected to a considerable fine. Be sure to check with the city any further details on dogs at our beach areas.

According to the Government, There’s No Private Beach Access

Is your beach private? The answer legally is no! Florida's law does not ban or privatize any beach. Therefore, you won't see dry land areas roped off or designated, discouraging the general public from entering the property. However, many of our condominium developments have private access, meaning they might have a no trespassing rule, but that's only the paths, walkways, or bridges leading to and from your property and not the land itself. Although satisfied homeowners who have beachfront property are concerned with things such as homeless and people trashing, the habitat may be worried — no need for this concern. There are very few issues for anyone to worry about the amount of monitoring done. Our parks and recreation are one of Florida's most significant assets, and the government does what it can to protect.

Fight for Clean Beaches is On the Rise

On a side note, many activists are fighting for cleaner beaches throughout the US. Please be conscious of litter and pollution. Our marine life is in danger with even the simplest of items such as straws. We want to keep our beach areas clean and safe for everyone, including the animals who call this place "home."

Pay Attention to Flags and Warnings from Lifeguards, Your Life Depends on Them

Pay attention to rip tides and other warnings from the lifeguard tower. If you're new to the area or are thinking about buying a property because of the beach, one thing you can't take for granted is the flag warnings near the lifeguard towers and stations. Before you even think about putting your feet in the water, it's recommended you look at the flags. Our beaches are amazing recreational spaces, but jellyfish, stingrays, shark, and rough waves are all part of living oceanside. Be sure to check these flags for daily updates and water conditions, so you're always safe.

Stay Off the Water and Sand When There’s Storms

To piggyback off the previous statement, if there's inclement weather doesn't make the mistake of heading into dangerous situations. Our state officials and authorities post essential details to keep you safe. Be sure to download apps such as Accuweather to help you stay in the know when storms are brewing over the ocean. Also, if you hear thunder or see lightning, take cover as it's only common sense. During hurricane weather such as Dorian, surfers felt the need to take advantage of the huge swells. While that may seem exciting, it's never a good idea to put yourself or someone else in danger.

Bonfires on the Beach Aren’t Legal

Let's conclude with some quick information on bonfires on the beach. Fires are prohibited where you could face an arrestable offense. If you'd like to have a campfire, Broward County is the place to be. However, you will need a permit from the city. While these rules may seem silly, they're necessary for keeping you and the environment safe.
