Chinese lantern festival for Jean-Luc Andriot blog 022417Boca Raton Entertainment & Events

We hope you discover the many activities after moving to Palm Beach County’s most sought after community. This weekend Boca Raton will help to launch the Chinese Lantern Festival for family entertainment with a touch of art, history and folklore. If you haven’t had a chance to see this colorful display of fine art, you’ll want to see what you’ve been missing. This week’s blog gives you a sneak preview of what you can expect from this eye-odyssey and art show.

From as early as 230 B.C. the Chinese have been making paper lanterns. Mostly made from bamboo and silk or paper these were originally used as a light source or lamp. Many of the lanterns were decorated with Chinese or Japanese folklore and symbols as a way of symbolizing Buddha’s power, myths about nature and a way to ward off evil spirits. Today’s lanterns can be either battery operated or lit with a candle but still carry the traditions with decorations of calligraphy and other symbols.

The lanterns for this traveling show have been constructed of are far more advanced using both technology and tradition. The material more commonly found in these decorative lanterns are now made of rayon and porcelain and have had music and visual effects added making them mainstream and durable. Both entertaining and a way of learning, this event will surely give you an opportunity to have an enriching experience.

Besides learning about the traditions of Chinese paper lanterns, there will be several artists on the scene. The artists perform and use a multitude of mediums such as clay sculpture, embroidery and hand painted beads to name a few. When you stop to consider how intricate and painstaking these crafts can be to create, you gain a different perspective and respect for this type of detail. Additionally, there are many home owners who have collections of Chinese art, both modern and traditional because of their meticulous ability to work in such minuscule ways. From their sculptures to their paintings, the Asian cultures define real beauty.

Other than the beautiful nature of the creative, the show features several performing arts as well. “The Kung Fu Embassy” offers martial arts performances and interactive games with the audiences. If you have little kids around, you’ll enjoy the look on their faces while posing and using their imaginations. If you’re living here as a snowbird, then this might be the one show, you won’t want to miss before departing. Don’t forget to bring the children and grandchildren!

If you’re planning on bringing the family, be sure to get their early to look for parking. While the Sunset Cove Amphitheater is ideal for walkable neighborhoods, it’s not always the best for people driving to and from the venue. A little tip from some of our staff suggests to park up close to the entrance if you can, as the parking lot is sure to be full and it’s not always the best for keeping track of your car. If you prefer, a limo service or executive car maybe more practical.

If the limo drops you and your family off, the convenience is ideal. This way you don’t have to look for parking or walk long distances to get inside. We recommend A-Class Limousines or Bocaluxlimo for your consideration as these are both reputable companies in the area. If you live in any of the country clubs, such as The Polo Club or the Addison Reserve, They will most likely have services to recommend.

Equally important, many of the local country clubs and condo associations offer group planning events. In fact, there are plenty of tours and art exhibits where our residents of the clubs join one another for a fun outing. In most cases, the show offers a discount when planned as a large group.

Feeding a large bunch of hungry people is another story. However, there is plenty of food at the event. Refreshments are made from Asian vendors making Szechuan and other cuisine for hungry yet lovers of the arts who are looking to enjoy.

Other than it being a fun event, the Chinese Lantern Festival supports the arts in many ways. By participating you are also assisting all the vendors, dancers, and artists with paying jobs doing what they love. You’re helping fund the future of other shows and the cultures behind making this visual odyssey. There’s a lot of happiness when you put these things in perspective.

In addition to joining your friends or family for this event, be sure to get your tickets online at the link provided. Be sure to pack a sweater or jacket as it is an outdoor event and the weather will most likely change.

Weather permitting you can find the Sunset Cove Amphitheater located at 12551 Glades Road, Boca Raton, Florida 33498. This venue is considered to be in West Boca.

You may find the following information to be helpful. This is an evening show from 5:30 pm to 10 pm and is opened seven days from February 24th to April 9th. You may also want to bring an umbrella in case of rain. Most likely if the weather looks threatening, they will not open so have a back up plan just in case. Weather permitting this is a rare opportunity and one you won’t want to bypass.

The Chinese typically hold their festival during harvest months. However, we are fortunate to have the display of incredible lanterns during the first month of the lunar year. Either way, it’s a visual fantasy that will keep you entertained by building a memorable experience. Whether you’re into the arts or just want a night to be entertained, this event will enlighten you on many levels.
